The
world is real; individual selves living in this world have
self-consciousness, self-determination and freedom of will. As such the
world is no illusion. If the world is not real and it is an illusion
only, then the individual selves would have been otherwise. As conscious
beings, we act voluntarily.
But
does it mean that as we have free will, we can do whatever we wish?
The
answer is 'no'. Why? Because, we have SELF-DETERMINATION.
Here
comes the most important feature of Indian Philosophy, i.e. SELF
CONTROL.
The
most striking and fundamental aspect of Indian Philosophy is that the
Indians regard philosophy as a practical necessity and cultivate it in
order to understand how life can be best led. Indian philosophical
wisdom is not merely the satisfaction of intellectual curiosity, but
mainly an enlightened life, how it can serve human ends, not by
encouraging selfishness but by utilitarian actions.
It follows
from all these features that individuals should act in such a way that
they can always rise above their “actual self”. The actual
self is mostly selfish; we have feelings and desires (namely cravings,
aggression, delusion, greed, jealousy, etc.) which are detrimental to
both our physical and our mental health.
As
all individuals have aspiration to transcend their “actual life”,
they have to control their behaviours. If we try to overcome the
detrimental feelings and desires with determination, we will discover a
new life, new existence. Each time we win over our selfishness, we
will feel as if we are reborn. When we get over all the
detrimental feelings and desires, we will liberate ourselves from all
worldly sufferings.
